What if you could build a creative practice with
an unshakable trust in art and the process?

Many years ago when I quit my job as an economist to become an artist, my aim was simple:
I wanted to create a studio practice that was true to who I was. The road to achieving this, however, was not as easy as I hoped. I struggled on every front imaginable, but I kept moving, learning and working.

After struggling for years trying to establish myself as an artist, I found a glimmer of hope in the very place where all my doubts lay — in my studio and in the work I was doing.

It was in my studio that I found answers to questions I had about what it meant to be an artist; where I learned to continue walking on the path that was uniquely mine. I learned to walk in wonder; curious and alive to the world. Today my work and studio practice are a natural reflection of who I am. That glimmer of hope I found long ago has now become a belief system that has served me through the ups and downs of an artist’s life.

And this brings me to you…

Think about where you are in your creative journey at the moment, and raise your hand if you…

X Are trying to find your artistic voice but are unable to make a breakthrough.

X Are curious about process oriented art, but don’t know how to make it work for you.

X Are struggling to work in the studio and lack enough feedback and support.

X Are seeking structured lessons to take your work to the next level.

X Want to create a body of work but don’t know where or how to begin.

X Are struggling with imposter syndrome, asking yourself, “Am I a real artist?”

X Are dealing with procrastination or comparing your work with others.

X Lack a strong community of fellow artists who are invested in your progress.

Now imagine this scenario instead:

  • Being confident about your journey as an artist.

  • Creating work that is true to who you are.

  • Being joyfully immersed in crafting your life as an artist.

  • Creating a practice that fosters self-discovery and self-reflection

  • Working with an unshakable trust in art and the process.

  • Having a mentor all year long, guiding and helping your progress.

  • Being surrounded by other creatives who provide support and accountability.

  • Being in a program that provides the right impetus for your unique artistic goals.

  • Finding a way out of creative blocks.

  • Being in a program where critiques aim to uplift your work and practice.

Welcome to

To Walk in Wonder:
Elevating Process and Practice in Art

A 12 month program for artists who want to develop a strong studio practice and
body of work based on the principles of process art.

To Walk in Wonder: The Five Pillars

PROCESS ORIENTED ART

Process oriented art, as the name suggests, emphasizes the process of making art rather than the end result; on the actions of the artist, starting with the proverbial blank canvas, and the layers or stages that lead to the final resolution. Process oriented art is both a working technique and a philosophical approach to creating work. The emphasis is on discovery and experimentation, and on active looking. Combined with deep knowing, looking with a critical eye (when the time is right), and trusting the process, you have a powerful working technique. Participants will learn the principles of process oriented art and work with prompts and exercises to explore this way of working.

STUDIO PRACTICE

An artist’s studio practice is a constantly evolving universe – a series of actions and ideas that bring new realities into being. It involves the creation of work, but also learning, researching, thinking, experimenting and leaning into one’s life experience. It is a system that has the potential to evolve into a living and breathing extension of the artist. Over the duration of the program, we will explore how to build an authentic studio practice. We will think about the what and why of your work, the deep reservoir that informs your work, and ways to make your practice reflect your inner world. We will also think about the studio (or the space where one works) where our work comes to life. We will explore how to honor this space and consider practical ways to optimize our studio systems. We will also ask what seeds we need to sow in the studio to make it a fertile land. The program includes extensive notes and exercises to help participants delve deeper into their practice.

MENTORSHIP

A mentor can provide valuable support to an artist. They can bring clarity to an artist’s work, offer tools to enhance their work processes, identify their strengths, and help them develop those strengths. Most importantly, a mentor can create a supportive environment and assist an artist in coping with the challenges of a creative life. During the mentorship calls held every quarter, we will delve into the artist's work, exploring its essence and ways to further develop it. The goal is to progress towards a vision that reflects the artist's truth.

ARTIST TALKS

To Walk in Wonder includes talks by artists (invited once every quarter), who will speak about their studio practice. This is a great opportunity to learn from another artist; about what motivates their work, how it has evolved over time, how they found their voice, how they deal with practical issues in their studio. We will also hear their views about what process means to them. These talks present the opportunity for participants to ask questions that may have particular relevance
for their practice.

COMMUNITY

The final pillar of To Walk in Wonder is the vibrant community of artists, who learn, support and lift each other. Imagine being connected to a group of artists equally committed to their studio practice as you are. Imagine critiques that are invigorating and uplifting; where you can discuss your work and receive feedback in a respectful manner. Imagine gaining from the knowledge and experience of other artists. Imagine a space where artists can have meaningful discussions in a structured setting and build a relationship with each other over time. This connection with the community serves as a strong support system while the artist goes back into the studio to work.

What People Are Saying about Priya’s Teaching

“Priya is a generous, sensitive, and thoughtful teaching artist. She weaved the program with beautiful threads of lessons and inquiries based on both her own work as an artist and that of a wide array of artists. The combination of small group sessions and one on one time with Priya was very useful for me. Artists at various stages of their practices would benefit from Priya's programs and creative spaces."

— Neha M.

“I highly recommend any working artist to attend Priya Vadhyar’s mentorship program. … Priya’s program is keenly insightful in providing solutions to the challenges and creative blocks that commonly plague artists in their work. The one-on-one sessions provided helpful guidance that transformed the way I work in my studio. I enjoyed getting to know other artists, and it was a supportive and helpful environment to work out the questions I had about my work, and the nature of art-making in general. I highly recommend Priya’s classes! She is a gifted artist and such a lovely human being.”

— Ann. N

“Working with Priya has been an incredible journey of artistic growth and discovery. Her thoughtful and well-researched approach to teaching is evident in every session. She managed our group with a perfect balance of encouragement and insight, fostering an environment where creativity flourished. As a mentor, Priya has not only deepened my understanding of art and my personal challenges but has also inspired me to explore new directions in my work. I’m truly and deeply grateful for her guidance and support.

— Vicky S.

“Priya opened my eyes and freed my hands to experiment with mark-making in ways I never imagined. Having the opportunity to react to features from all the senses and playing with chance and spontaneity are all exhilarating aspects of these experimental classes. Priya encourages risk taking and having fun with the process of creating in every sense.

Priya’s presentations are works of art in themselves. Her preparation is exceptional. I have taken many art classes but never one like this. She is a wonderful teacher; she sparks creative thinking with exciting prompts, exercises and inspiring resources.”

— Sarah M.

“Priya has set a new standard for instruction, mining stores of resources from across many disciplines presenting them in exquisite jewel cases of exercises shining gems each, leaving you wanting to dig into yourself and find the ones that are your own.”

— Suzanne B.

”…Priya has been on a journey of Riyaaz, the Urdu word for a sustained practice in the realm of the arts. Her Riyaaz is her journey.  It is the process that she trusts more than the results.  This was conveyed in different ways …. helped me clarify and reaffirm my need for my art. Wading through the beautiful but tangled swampland of family, children, jobs and other commitments can be hard and discouraging for the artist's spirit.  Priya helped us chart that swampland with maps and landmarks and navigate the same spaces over and over again. She is organized, honest, kind and insightful. Her elegant, minimalist and yet rich presentations lifted a veil or two from parts of myself that I had gotten accustomed to ignoring. I felt refreshed and awake to my art and my muse. The fog over my swampland had lifted….”

Meet your Instructor

Hello… My name is Priya Vadhyar. I am a visual artist living and working in Mumbai. I recently moved from the United States after 15 years for a new personal adventure. I am a process painter exploring the boundaries of the self through abstraction. I have exhibited my work nationally and internationally. I am also the Founder of
Studio/ Line of Sight, an educational platform for immersive
art workshops.

My journey in the arts officially began in 2005 when I quit my job as an economist to become an artist. At the time I wasn’t sure what my next steps would be, but I knew that I would find my way. I was fortunate to become a student of Josh Goldberg, with whom I studied advanced abstract painting. This was a pivotal point in my life. All that I was searching for came into being when I began to trust the process. It was how my ‘style’ evolved organically; true to who I was. Now, more than a decade later, I hope to teach you all that I know about process, practice and walking in wonder.
