Being a studio artist is a solitary activity for most of us. While the studio is where meaning unfolds delicately like a flower, it is also where we battle doubts and face roadblocks. We can all benefit from a support system that nurtures our strengths, equips us to tackle our creative obstacles, and takes us closer to our vision.

Artist at Work: Cultivating the Creative Spirit is a program that addresses this very need. Designed as a four-month mentorship program, Artist at Work is geared towards visual artists who have a practice that they would like to deepen in a supportive environment. The program focuses on studio work — on developing a fresh outlook toward your work, and on tools and support to help you achieve your goals. Through the program, we will try to understand what we do and why we do it; and as we find answers we will find a deeper commitment to ourselves.

In our group sessions we will dig deep into what constitutes a studio practice. We will discuss the creative process and learn how artists, writers and poets across history found the drive to sustain their practice. We will look at our work with a new perspective, create personal goals (for the duration of the program and beyond), review our progress, and discuss our wins and challenges.
Number of group sessions: Four | Duration: 3 hours each month

During the one-on-one session, we will go over the particulars of your studio practice. We will discuss your work with the aim that you achieve the goals that you've set for yourself, and to work towards a vision that is true to you.
Number of one-on-one sessions: Four | Duration: 1 hour each month

In her current work, Priya explores the manifestation of, what Loren Eiseley calls one’s “interior geography,” and the self’s relationship with the sum of things. She has a Master’s Degree in Economics from the University of Mumbai. In 2010, Priya moved to Tucson, Arizona. There, she studied advanced abstract painting with artist Josh Goldberg, who later became her mentor. Priya's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
“My inspiration for this program comes from two sources. One, is my deep interest in the creative process and its mysteries. I love to understand how artists work, their little idiosyncrasies, and work modes. I have tried many approaches in my own studio practice, and believe that I have much to share with other artists.

The second source of inspiration is an art group I was a part of in Tucson (AZ). The program, developed by Katherine Gregg and Catharine Kim Woodin, benefited me in more ways than one. I grew as an artist with the support of this group, and hope to bring the same optimism to Artist at Work. I hope you will join me.”

TESTIMONIALS

"I absolutely loved and highly recommend Priya's 'Artist at Work: Cultivating the Creative Spirit' program which has been incredibly meaningful to deepen my studio practice. For me, the program was part guided meditation on creative life and part a practical toolkit with which to nurture my studio work. Priya is a generous, sensitive, and thoughtful teaching artist. She weaved the program with beautiful threads of lessons and inquiries based on both her own work as an artist and that of a wide array of artists. The combination of small group sessions and one on one time with Priya was very useful for me. Artists at various stages of their practices would benefit from Priya's programs and creative spaces."

“The workshop “Artist at Work” is a journey exploring many aspects of creativity and art making. Priya is an inspiring and encouraging guide, helping her students begin to understand and appreciate more about their personal art practices. In this class students have the opportunity to talk to others about making art, seeing the uniqueness of other’s approaches and paths. The daily practice of art, the part art has played in one’s past and the trajectory of art making in the future are all topics examined in these classes. As in all of Priya’s classes, her preparation is excellent and stimulating. The emphasis is more on thought provoking questions than answers and proved to be an extraordinary experience in self-discovery.”

““I am an artist.’ How difficult can it be to say that? Although having made art for over fifty years it was still extremely so. When asked what do you do, I would answer with the medium in which I was working at that moment. An artist? No, that was an affirmation I could not bring myself to own. ‘Artist at Work’ with Priya, the work that she initiated and facilitated both within our group discussions and in our one on one exchanges has forever changed that. I AM AN ARTIST.”
